Unused Azure nonprofit credit doesn't roll over, so a quiet year on the account is value lost without anyone noticing.

The arithmetic is simple. US$2,000 a year is about US$167 a month, and that is the number to hold every resource against. A burn-rate check makes it concrete: roughly US$1,500 left at month 3, US$1,000 at month 6, US$500 at month 9, and close to zero at month 12 with the renewal done. Before the first resource exists, turn on multifactor authentication for admin accounts and set usage alerts at 50, 80 and 90 percent, sent to two people.

Our Azure Nonprofit Grant Guide (PDF) takes an eligible organization from Microsoft's eligible and ineligible lists and the one-tenant rule, through Goodstack validation and the registration form, to the 90-day activation window, where to check your balance, renewal and a troubleshooting table. It also lists what the credit can't pay for: reserved instances, third-party Marketplace offers and support plans.

You end up with a credit that is planned month by month instead of discovered in month eleven.

Figures were re-verified against Microsoft's documentation in October 2026. Programs change, so confirm on the official page before you act.
